Going the distance with signal strength

Users often present their problems with a good deal of frustration. Many times it is because they don't understand why they can't connect when the network appears to be up and running. There are some important things to know in these situations as well as some effective steps that can be taken to attempt to solve the problem.

Defining the problem

The signal that is broadcast by a wireless access point can be very strong. However, even the strongest of these signals can be affected by many outside variables. Simple things such as weather can sometimes cause the strength of the broadcast to vary. Large physical objects between the client and host can severely diminish signal strength as well. Construction materials, such as wire mesh used in stucco exteriors, can also block wireless signals. These factors are assessed first when signal strength seems to be the problem.

Technology has come a long way and has really helped solve many issues at the access point level. But there really is no way to anticipate every type of client hardware. The variety of mobile devices in the market is massive and growing each day. It is virtually impossible for network providers to prepare for each device and its unique configuration. Possible solutions

There are a few quick and easy steps users can take to help at a location where they are getting low signal reception. If users are attempting to connect with a wireless enabled laptop, it can be very helpful to simply make sure the computer is plugged into the power outlet. A quick machine reboot solves the problem in certain cases. Physically moving to other areas is also an easy solution in some cases but when these strategies do not work, hope is still not lost.

There are built-in configuration settings from the manufacturer for a machine that are put in place to conserve battery life when certain components are not needed to operate at full power. It is often helpful to check to make sure that the wireless card is set up for optimal output. Not all cards are the same and it can be a decent amount of work to make sure a wireless device is operating at its fullest potential.

These have been just a few examples of what is considered when an XpressAssist agent gets a call from a user who is experiencing difficulty connecting due to low signal strength. It's not always as black and white as some may think when it comes to connecting to a wireless network.
